For patients in a significant bone loss situation that cannot go through traditional dental implants, implant specialists may recommend an alternative called pterygoid implants, also known as “pterygoid-maxillary implants” or “tuberosity implants”. Pterygoid implants are considered an effective dental solution for patients with severe maxillary bone loss.

What is a pterygoid implant?

Pterygoid implants are often performed on patients diagnosed with severe maxillary bone loss that they are not able to undergo traditional dental implants on the upper jaw. Even if a specialist tries to place the implant, the jawbone still fails to integrate with the tooth root, resulting in implant failure. While patients can choose to replace their teeth with dentures, either complete or removably partial, dental implants are still considered the best long-term solution for tooth loss. Instead of anchoring the dental implant vertically into the jawbone as is done with traditional implants, pterygoid implants are anchored at a 45-degree angle into the pterygoid plate in the middle. Indications

For patients with complete tooth loss in the upper jaw, implant insertion can be difficult when the level of jaw bone loss is high, combined with the placement position being quite close to the maxillary sinus area. In this case, pterygoid implants are considered a suitable choice when the remaining jaw bone is used as a position to anchor the implant without the need for bone grafting or sinus lift. To avoid distal cantilevers, pterygoid implants may be indicated in cases of partial or complete edentulism. Studies have shown that there is no clear difference between cannulated implants and pterygoid-maxillary implants.

Clinical recommendations

In science articles, the terms “pterygoid implants”, “pterygoid-maxillary implants” and “cannulated implants” are used interchangeably to describe implant insertion in the posterior molar region. By definition, “pterygoid implants” is the insertion to the posterior bone of the maxilla (the tuberosity), attached to the pterygoid plate. However, it is not necessarily in all cases that the implant is attached to the pterygoid plate but in the anterior position of the pterygoid-maxillary region, parallel to the posterior wall of the maxillary sinus.

Prognosis

The average success rate of pterygoid implants is 90.7%

Complications

Inserting a pterygoid implant can potentially cause bleeding from the pterygoid plexus or maxillary artery. However, this can be avoided by placing the implant directly in the cheekbone. Patients need to be examined, x-rayed and consulted by a doctor to get the most appropriate and safest treatment regimen.

Every year, at the end of each year, Department of Health of Vietnam conducts an audit of all hospitals to ensure these hospitals meet the 83 hospital standards issued by the Department (these standards are similar to the standards issued by the Joint Commission International Accreditation). In Ho Chi Minh city, which is where our hospital is located, there is a total of 102 hospitals. Worldwide Beauty & Dental Hospital is proud to announce that we’ve achieved good rating from Vietnam Department of Health and are in the top 5 Cosmetic Hospitals in our first year of operation as a hospital, which has never been accomplished before.

As some of you may know, JCI standards, and similarly Department of Health hospital standards, are created for general hospitals. Therefore, some of these standards are not as applicable nor necessary to cosmetic hospitals, which are specialized hospitals, such as recovery care, nutrition care and medication for patients. For cosmetic hospitals, while we still provide our patients with recovery room, meals and medication, we simply just don’t have patients that need extensive recovery care, specific nutrition and special medication. Amy Tran was originally born and raised in Vietnam. At the age of 16, she moved to the US to gain an American education and work for some of the best companies in the world. She graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Santa Clara University, in the heart of Silicon Valley, California. Upon graduating, she was hired as an auditor at Deloitte & Touche, which is the largest professional services firm in the world. She worked at Deloitte for 10 years, being promoted rapidly, leaving as a senior manager on her way to becoming a partner/managing director. She put her career on hold however, at the request of her parents, moving back home to help manage the hospital in October 2018.

Amy is the perfect candidate for the job. Her bilingual background, and familiarity with both Vietnamese and American culture allows her to connect well with both Vietnamese and international clients. She has personally experienced the high quality of American healthcare standards for years and vows to have Worldwide Dental & Plastic Surgery Hospital follow the same standards of being well-organized, safe, effective, caring, and most importantly, always putting the customer first.

Although managing a hospital is a new field, Amy’s experiences as an auditor in Silicon Valley gave her many insights on how to run a business. At Deloitte, Amy served all types of companies from start-ups to big public companies. She was involved in multiple initial public offerings and has seen companies grow from less than 50 employees to thousands. She identified key attributes of those companies which drove them towards success: strong management & company mission, efficient yet thorough processes, respect and accountability between all levels of the business.
