DENTAL CROWNS AND BRIDGES

A dental crown is a tooth-like cap placed over a tooth to restore its original shape, appearance, and functionality. It is used for severe cases of chipped, broken, eroded, tilted, or discolored teeth. For extreme cases of tilted/broken/eroded teeth, a root canal treatment may be required prior to placement of cosmetic porcelain crowns.

A dental bridge is used to replace missing teeth. This is attached to the adjacent teeth next to the missing tooth, called abutment teeth. These replacements are either permanently attached (fixed), or they can be removable. Fixed types of dental bridges are applied by either placing a covering on the abutment teeth or by bonding the artificial teeth directly to the abutment teeth. Removable replacements, on the other hand, are attached to the teeth with metal clasps or precision attachments. At Dr. Hung & Associates the dental bridge cost for the procedure would depend on if you’re replacing a tooth or a full set of teeth.

WHY DO YOU NEED HELP FROM A DENTAL CROWN SPECIALIST?

  • Broken/chipped tooth that can’t be restored by filling, veneer, inlay/onlay
  • Tooth with a big amalgam filling that needs to be replaced
  • Badly discolored teeth due to tetracycline
  • Tooth that has worn out considerably, could be due to grinding
  • To protect a tooth that is likely to break due to weakness or injury
  • Damaged tooth that has already had root canal treatment
  • Tooth with unpleasant color or shape

A veneer is a thin layer of laminate/porcelain (0.3 to 0.5 mm) that is placed on the outer surface of your teeth, helping you to achieve the desired aesthetic.

Veneer does not require as much teeth grinding as dental crowns and bridges, therefore you might not require root canal treatment and could keep as much of your real teeth as possible.

WHY DO YOU NEED LAMINATE / PORCELAIN VENEERS?

Discolor teeth, cracked teeth that are not too severe
Small teeth, teeth with some small gaps in between
Other minor abnormal defects of the teeth

Suitable cases for veneers

COMPARISONS BETWEEN DENTAL CROWNS AND VENEER?

When it comes to choosing between veneers and porcelain crowns, it really depends on the type of condition your teeth are in, and what sort of results you’re looking to gain. As a general rule, porcelain crowns are much more regularly used for patients who have severe fillings, cracked or worn teeth, or root canals. For those looking more for cosmetic improvements, veneers are more popular as a less invasive treatment.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR A DENTAL CROWN?

The treatment time and dental crown cost of the procedure depends on how many caps need to be placed on top of the tooth. On average, restoration for the whole jaw (8-10 crowns) requires approximately 5-7 days, including 4-5 appointments.

Appointment 1: Perform general examination, take CT Cone Beam x-ray, perform a digital scan and take pictures for Smile Design. The doctor will discuss with the patient to design the most ideal smile using 3Shape scanner software so that the patient can see the new smile. The doctor will then come up with a treatment plan. Your teeth will be checked carefully to identify and eliminate all potential risks. If any pre-crown procedures need to be performed such as teeth cleaning, root canal treatment, etc., they will be done at this appointment.

Appointment 2: The doctor will guide the patient through the color and shape selection, then prepare teeth for the procedure and take an impression for the study cast. The dental crown specialist will then place a temporary covering on the teeth to prevent sensitivity. The temporary covering is only for aesthetic reasons and not for chewing. The patient will then wait 2-3 days for our in-house laboratory to make the porcelain crowns.

Appointment 3: Try in and install the crowns. Check for proper bite and make adjustments as necessary.

Appointment 4: Final check-up.

It is recommended that patients have an oral check-up and cleaning every 6 months, either at our hospital or with any local dental crown specialist.
